Morgan Mountain Retreat is situated on the top of the mountain at 3,000 ft. altitude, close by the Pisgah National Forest, at the end of a mile of unpaved, privately-maintained gravel road. Here, it’s quiet! A stream and waterfalls are on the property, and can be heard through the woods from the front porch. A picnic site with charcoal grill is close to one of the falls.

Spring morning view looking north into the valley below. Trees are budding, dogwood is in bloom.

Morgan Mountain Retreat is ideal for rest and relaxation or for those who enjoy hiking and other outdoor activity in a secluded, somewhat remote location 15 minutes from the nearest small, country grocery store or cafe, yet within 45 minutes of many major regional attractions. Located off Hwy. 178 just south of Rosman, about 15 miles south of Brevard, a noted small city with all conveniences including hospital and a variety of restaurants. Asheville and Hendersonville are 40 minutes away; Cashiers 40 minutes to the west; Pickens, South Carolina, an hour south by winding highway through the mountains.

Wildflowers are many — more than 40 varieties in our area, many of them on our mountain. In April and May we have Catawba rhododendron, mountain laurel, birdfoot violets and others. We have many dogwood trees, the first to bloom, about mid-April. Other trees include white and red oak, maple, hemlock, hickory, locust, white pine, poplar, elm and others. Lots of birds, including grouse, carolina wren, towhee, cardinals, yellow finch, hummingbirds. Wild turkeys are back on our mountain! Visitor counts of 23 and 50-some kinds of birds. Occasional deer sightings. Some black bears have been recently seen close by! Old wagon trails, unmaintained but ideal for roaming, go for miles on our mountain. Canoe rental nearby at French Broad River. The Blue Ridge Scenic Parkway through Balsam Grove is 30 minutes from our house, through Pisgah about 45 minutes.

MOUNTAIN WEATHER: can be damp, chilly and stormy at any time of year, winter or summer! Sometimes it's icy in November and, while not common, there can be snow.
